Monica GrunickLetter to your Future Self
We love sending love letters, and a there is no more deserving recipient of your love than yourself. Wondering what a love letter to your future self might look like or the magic it may unlock for you, read on.
Visualize what you want to be, do, and feel
The act of writing a letter is simple, but the impact can be profound.
When you create a letter to your future self, you are setting an intention for what you want to bring forth into the world. You are wishing yourself well, and creating a vision for what you want to be, do, and feel in the future.
Sometimes it can be hard to show ourselves love when we are struggling, or just distracted with life and focusing on making it through each day the best we can. While it may not take more than 10 minutes to write, this time to formulate a future for yourself is powerful and can begin to move your daily actions in the right direction.
Instructions on writing your letter
When ever we have an event at our store we love getting out the stationery and pens and giving our guests a chance to send themselves love. We then mail these letters to everyone exactly one year later, and they get a lovely surprise in the mail full of lovely wishes for themselves.
You can write a letter how ever you choose, here are some tips and ideas.
- Select a lovely card or stationery that brings you joy.
- Don't over think what you want your future you to be, do, and feel. What your gut tells when you ask yourself these questions are usually the most authentic answers and wants for your life, versus what someone else wants for you.
- Put it in an envelope or tape it shut. Write the date on the back so you know when to open it.
- Set a reminder on your calendar to check open your letter in one year, or ask a friend to mail it to you. You could both write letters and mail them to each other one year later.
The practice of writing to your future self is inspired from a practice followed by professor and designer Debbie Millman. For more on her practice view our entry, 5 Journal Prompts for Deep Reflection.
